What is the difference between a legal DNA test and a peace-of-mind DNA test?

A legal DNA test follows a strict chain-of-custody process, including identity verification and witnessed sample collection. Legal DNA test results may be used for court proceedings, child support, custody matters, birth certificate changes, and other legal purposes.

A peace-of-mind DNA test provides DNA relationship information for personal knowledge but does not follow the legal chain-of-custody requirements. Peace-of-mind results are not intended for use in court.

Most DNA test results are available within 3–5 business days after the laboratory receives the samples. Turnaround times may vary depending on the type of relationship test being performed.

DNA paternity testing is highly accurate. When the tested man is the biological father, results typically show a probability of paternity of 99.9% or greater. When he is not the biological father, the test will exclude him as the biological father.

Yes. Legal DNA testing follows a documented chain-of-custody process and may be used for court proceedings, child support, custody matters, birth certificate changes, and other legal purposes. Peace-of-mind DNA test results are intended for personal knowledge and are not designed for court use.

A standard paternity test typically includes the alleged father and child. The mother is not required in most cases, although she may participate in a trio paternity test when appropriate.

DNA test results are delivered confidentially once testing is complete. Peace-of-mind results are typically sent electronically to the individual who purchased the test. Legal DNA test results are handled according to chain-of-custody requirements and may also be provided to authorized attorneys or other designated parties when applicable.
